Sour Candy Is Almost As Bad For Teeth As Battery Acid

A report by Northwest Dentistry says sucking on sour candy can be nearly as bad for your teeth as consuming battery acid. Teeth start losing enamel at pH 4, and many sour candies have a pH of 3 or less. Battery acid has a pH of 1.

Several candies have a pH very close to that, including WarHeads Sour Spray (pH 1.6), Wonka Fun Dip Powder (1.8) and Pixy Stix Powder (1.9). Even original Skittles and Brach’s Gummi Bears have a pH of 2.5.

Study: School Soda Bans Don’t Lower Consumption

A new study has found that banning soda in schools has little impact on the amount of sugary drinks middle school students consume at school.

First of all, most of these bans only cover soda — not other sugary drinks like Gatorade or juice drinks. The study indicated that, even when all sugary drinks were banned in schools, students’ consumption of sugary drinks did not fall, suggesting that they were getting the drinks elsewhere.

Experts say that while it makes sense for schools to be the starting place for limiting sugary beverages, they can’t do it on their own. Teenagers currently get about 15 percent of their daily calories from sugary beverages, with two-thirds of those calories coming from soda.

The Daily Show Investigates Hot Dog Safety

The Daily Show recently looked at the danger of hot dogs to public safety by interviewing National Hot Dog and Sausage Council President Janet Riley. Riley defended the safety of the hot dog against claims by a doctors’ group.
“While The Daily Show may appear on the Comedy Channel, research shows that growing number of Americans rely on the show as a key source of news and information,” Riley said.  “Stewart’s credibility scores are on par with many leading journalists and we were gratified to take our message to this increasingly important source of information.”

Denmark Taxes Fatty Foods

Denmark is issuing a new “fat tax” that will place an extra tax on fattening foods like butter and chips. It is estimated that the tax could decrease Danes’ intake of saturated fat by about 10 percent, with butter consumption decreasing by 15 percent. The tax will be assessed for every 2.5 kg of saturated fat in a product. According to Mike Rayner, Director of Oxford University’s  Health Promotion Group, this is the first such tax in history.
