Flavored Milk Slashes Calories, Sugar

Flavored milk in schools has been a hot debate lately, with some school districts even banning the drink. Now the Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP), which runs the National Milk Mustache “got milk?” Campaign has announced school milk cartons will contain fewer than 150 calories and 22 grams of sugar on average. This means flavored versions will contain about 31 more calories than traditional white milk. MilkPEP argues that many children won’t drink milk at all unless it’s flavored, and the organization says milk is an important source of calcium and other nutrients recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Scientists Discover New MRSA Superbug In Cow’s Milk

Reuters is reporting that scientists have found a new, ultra-powerful strain of MRSA in cow’s milk in swab samples from humans. What’s most alarming is that this particular strain cannot be detected by standard tests and is resistant to antibiotics. However, researchers contend that the bug is unlikely to cause infections by infiltrating the food system through milk, as pasteurization should prevent any risk of the disease entering the food chain.
